A blood donation exercise to mobilize blood for the Koforidua Regional Hospital Blood Bank has taken place in within the Adult OPD premise of the hospital.
It was jointly organized by the Eastern Regional office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in collaboration with the Regional Hospital’s Blood Bank.
Speaking to healthylifegh on the exercise on Monday, Mr Phanuel Mordzifa, the Eastern Regional Blood Donation organizer said it had been a good exercise.
He hinted that Senior High Schools which have been a main source of donation of blood for the banks will soon be going on vacation, and when this happens, there is almost always a shortage of blood.
The bank therefore takes advantage of the holiday to organize blood donation exercises during the republic day holiday.
Mr Mordzifa refuted the public perception that, when ever people donate blood and were in need, they are not helped.
According to him, “we operate like the financial banks, when you donate blood, your card serves as an insurance for you. When you are in need, we will also help you”
As of 12:47pm, 80 pints of blood had been donated.
Some groups including churches, organized themselves to join in the exercise.
Mr Mordzifa also appealed to the public to join the few number of voluntary donors stating that, those who donate to replace blood taken by a relative or friend are more than those who voluntarily donate to the bank, this according to him should not be so.
He said the exercise had become an annual one, and called on all Ghanaians to donate blood voluntarily and without remuneration to save lives.
On their part, the National Health Insurance Authority mounted a stand where participants who needed to renew their Health Insurance Cards had their cards renewed.
