Too much fraud at NHIS – Osafo Maafo
Too much fraud at NHIS – Osafo MaafoSenior | Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo has called on pharmacists in the country to help government minimise fraud associated with the handling of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The NHIS has been hit by a series of fraudulent activities since its inception, these fraudulent acts have usually been perpetuated by a ring of people.
Sometimes involving several line managers in the chain of medical service provision.
It is to address some of these worrying happenings that the Senor Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo took time at the conference of Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana to comment on reducing fraud within the NHIS.
Speaking at the conference of Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana on Wednesday, August 2 held in Kumasi, Mr Osafo Maafo appealed to the pharmacists to help the NHIA device a system to minimise fraud in the procurement of medicines.
He said: “A lot of fraud associated in the handling of the National Health Insurance Scheme. It is so embarrassing when you look at some of these frauds. The relationship between pharmacy shops, patients and doctors in these claims is disturbing.
“And, do help us, because fraud in the administration of drugs associated with the National Health Insurance is one of the major headaches…”.
In connection with the several amounts of money the scheme owes various facilities, he indicated that government is committed to paying health insurance claims on time.
It can be recalled that early this year, the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) lamented bitterly on the several amounts of money owed the association.
The association complained bitterly on how some Pharmaceutical companies were not willing to supply drugs to members of the CHAG because of their indebtedness.
The Senior Minister however assured that government is committed to paying health insurance claims on time, this will indirectly help to reduce if not eradicate the indebtedness of the scheme to various health facilities.
