Patients who might require blood transfusion at the Koforidua Regional Hospital for medical treatment could face possible danger as the blood bank is faced with shortage making health care delivery difficult.
The Principal Blood Program Organizer, Phanuel Mordzifa says the shortage is seriously affecting the day to day operations of the hospital and makes it difficult to provide for patients who need blood.
Mr. Phanuel Mordzifa was speaking after members of Baamaiyi Sai Allah, a non-profit organization in collaboration with the Office of the Regional Chief Imam organized an emergency blood donation exercise to support the blood bank at the Koforidua zongo in the Eastern Region.
The management team of the Regional Hospital Blood Bank expressed worry over the current shortage of blood at the bank, as this could put the lives of patients who visit the facility and need blood in danger.
Mr. Mordzifa said the shortage of blood was the reason why the blood bank team called on the organization and the Office of the Eastern Regional Chief imam to organize an emergency blood donation exercise to encourage the community members to donate blood and also support the hospital blood bank.
He expressed his appreciation to the people of Koforidua zongo community for giving the hospital 30 pints of blood and urged the public to walk into the hospital and donate to support the bank.
Mr. Mordzifa further added that if there is no blood at the regional hospital blood bank, it will be difficult for emergency cases to be attended to.
It will be very difficult for patients whose conditions are in critical state and seriously in dire need of urgent blood to be saved, their lives could be in danger if the public fail to volunteer and donate to replenish the hospital blood bank, he said.
The Deputy Blood Program Organizer, Philomena Quayson also pleaded with the general public especially churches and other clubs and organizations to come to the aid of the hospital and donate to support the blood bank to save more lives.
She indicated that the blood bank runs out of stock often when senior high schools vacate since the schools are their main source of volunteer donors.
The Secretary of Baamaiyi Sai Allah Organization, Alhaji Shamsu Deen Hashimiyu explained that this emergency blood donation exercise forms part of Baamaiyi Sai Allah organization volunteering programme which is aimed at raising awareness on the importance of donating blood and helping to save lives.
According to him, the organization had not planned very well to organize the blood donation exercise, but did it in response to the call from the bank.
He urged the general public to avail themselves for such important exercises to donate and support the hospital blood bank.
According to him, voluntary blood donation by the staff of the organization has become a routine that formed part of their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
